Glossary

When speaking of the Qur'an and Islam in general there are at times the need to abbreviate certain words and phrases for the sake of convenience and time. However some people may not be used to these specific abbreviations that have come about because of the interpretation of the originals to English from Arabic, from where many derive. For your convenience these abbreviations have been added to this page and hopefully will allow you to better understand their meanings.

We have covered the basics here and there are many more, but hopefully these too will be added on this page, Insha'Allah. Along with the abbreviations, some phrases have been added which are once again derived from their Arabic origin and will be added in due course as more of them are used in articles.

Unfortunately because of the wide differences in languages and the way sentences are constructed in each language the literal meaning is lost somewhat (ask someone to translate a poem and make it rhyme with the same rhythm and meaning intact and you are getting close to understanding the difficulty and enormity of the task).

SAW - Sallahu-Allaih -Wa Salaam ~ a blessing on the Prophet Muhammed (SAW) may Allah be pleased with him

RA - Rasi-Allaht'Allah-Andtu ~ a blessing on scholars and eminent figures in Islam, for example the Caliphs and Sahaba. May Allah be pleased with them

SWT - Subhana -Wa-T'Allah ~

PBUH - Peace Be Upon Him ~

PBUT - Peace Be Upon Them

TMQ - Translated Meaning of the Qur'an ~ the Qur'an is written in Arabic and translation of it into other languages is generally denoted with TMQ

Sahaba - the companions of the Prophet Muhammed (SAW)

Insha'Allah - God Willing

Ramadan - The holy month of Ramadan is a time for fasting from dawn to dusk for the Muslim. Extra prayers are said at dusk and it is preferable to start and finish the Quran during this month
